Bowling Try Outs
Try out dates in November
Attention Parents and students:
Before you can participate in try outs you need to make sure of the following:
- you must have a current physical on file in the Athletic office. (Typically freshman and juniors need the green physical form which requires a doctor's signature. Sophomores and seniors need the cream or alternate year card signed by parents only.)
- A signed acknowledgment page that you read the 2009/2010 Code of Conduct.
- An Emergency contact sheet (even if you filled one out for a fall sport). All of the forms mentioned above are available in the Athletic office.
The objective of bowling try outs are:
Most students have no prior experience. Just come out with a positive attitude and the experienced coaches will show you the rest. There will be 15 to 20 minutes of practice before the lanes are turned on for scoring.
You need to bowl six games during the try out period. You can elect to bowl in the following manner:
-
3 games Monday, then 3 games on either Tuesday or Wednesday
-
2 games Monday, then 2 games Tuesday and 2 games on Wednesday
The objective of each day is to have all students get the correct number of games in. After you have completed your games for the day you can leave. YOU MUST BE PICKED UP NO LATER THAN 5:00 pm. If time and lanes are available you can stay and work on your game. The coaches will have a longer period of time to make observation if the student bowls 2 games every day. There will be 4 to 5 coaches at Root River each day of try outs.
ALL SIX GAMES MUST BE COMPLETED BY 5:00 PM -WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 3RD 2008. IF YOU HAVE A CONFLICT WITH THE TIME OF TRYOUTS CONTACT COACH SCHOMMER BEFORE TRY OUTS BEGIN. You can do this by using the high school "bowling mail box" or by calling Coach Schommer 414-421-4868 or 414-708-0733 to make other arrangements. Depending on the number of students who try out, cuts may be necessary.
Try outs are considered a "closed" event. No visitors until the last fifteen minutes of the day. NO CELL PHONES OR ELECTRONIC DEVICES ARE ALLOWED DURING TRY OUTS OR PRACTICES.
What do you need to try out? You do not need anything! You can use the house balls and shoes free of charge. If you have your own equipment you are more than welcome to use it. Coaches will help you with higher level equipment and gear once you made the team. If you need transportation to try outs contact the Athletic Director, Sara Petric, she can make arrangement with the bus route in that area.
Team selection will be posted in the Athletic office.
Practice always starts at 3:15 pm at Root River.
Good Luck!
Coach Schommer
Facts to know about High School Bowling
There are three divisions in high school bowling:
- Varsity Boys
- Varsity Girls
- JV.
This year our District has expanded by 5 schools: Brookfield East, Pewaukee, West Allis Central, West Allis Hale and Wauwasota West. They joined the following teams: Franklin, Germantown, Greendale, Homestead, Menomonee Falls, Mukwonago, Muskego, New Berlin, Oak Creek, Pulaski, Sussez Hamilton, Thomas More, Waukesha North, Waukesha West
Girls are allowed to bowl on a Varsity Boys team only if your high school does not have a Varsity Girls team. The bowling season coincides with other winter sports, starting in mid November and finishing with state competition on the first weekend in March.
Number of students per team: the maximum number of students is 10. The average team size is 7 students.
We have 14 schools participating with a total of 42 teams. (19 Varsity Boys, 12 Varsity Girls and 19 JV teams)
Franklin considers bowling a letter sport.
Practices
Practices are held off site at a local bowling center. The owners /managers of Root River support Franklin's bowling team by providing times at their center when the team/s can practice. This has been provided at no charge. We have not established firm practice days for the 2007-2008 season as the scheduled has not been released yet. In the past, Franklin has practiced on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:15 pm to 5:00 pm until the season starts. Practices are considered "closed practices" until the last 15 minutes of the day.
NO CELL PHONES OR ELECTRONIC DEVICES ARE ALLOWED.
What happens during practice?
- Team meeting
- Team stretches
- Warm-up drills
- Skills practice (games, spare exercise, etc.)
Team Expenses Conference fees are: The cost per student is $30.00. The cost for lineage per team per match is $25.00 Example: We will have 3 teams of 7 students and varsity boys have 17 matches, varsity girls have 22 and JV have 14 matches per year. Our expenses will be:
21 students x $30.00 fee = $630.00 - Student Conference Fees 17 matches x $25.00 lineage = $425.00 - Varsity Boys 22 matches x $25.00 lineage = $550.00 - Varsity Girls 14 matches x $25.00 lineage = $350.00 - JV
For a total of $1,955.00 (this is paid for by fund raising and some school budget)
Transportation to the matches Franklin has a travel budget from the school and travels in district owned vehicles. Other schools use a parent network to get their students to the matches.
Matches Matches are held on Thursday and Saturdays. Thursday are normally 1.5 hours to bowl plus any travel. Saturdays are normally 3 hours to bowl plus any travel.
Matches are bowled in Baker Style bowling. That is where five students bowl 1 game by each student bowling 2 frames. Example 1st bowler bowls frames 1 & 6, the 2nd bowler bowls frames 2 & 7, 3rd bowler bowls frames 3 & 8, 4th bowler bowls frames 4 & 9 and the 5th bowler bowling frames 5 & 10. The winner of a match is determined by who wins 5 out of 9 games with a minimum of 7 games bowled. Score sheets are provided by District 1 High School Bowling.
Based on win / lost records schools can represent our district at state competition. There is team competition as well and individual competition.
Dress Code A dress code does exist; each team has to have matching collared shirts with the high school name on the back of the shirt and the District 1 High School Bowling logo on a sleeve. You must also wear the same color pants, whatever your team chooses. The District does have a shirt allowance the team uses.
Once your student makes the team under no circumstances can they bowl in any event that is considered an adult league? An example would be pacing on a couples league if one of the adults is absent. This is RULE 400 in the USBC rule book.
